Poll Worker and Watcher Information for Mississippi
Poll managers shall ensure the election is conducted fairly and agreeably to law; and they shall be judges of the qualifications of electors. They resolve any challenges to voters and are responsible for processing absentee ballots along with the additional duties listed below. (Miss. Code Ann. § 23-15-233)
Poll Managers are primarily responsible for:
- Safeguarding all election materials;
- Ensuring only qualified voters are permitted to vote and each qualified voter ispermitted to vote only once;
- Verifying acceptable photo identification is presented by each voter;
- Verifying the picture on the presented photo identification fairly depicts the voter;
- Verifying the name on the presented photo identification is substantially similar to thevoter’s name as it appears on the pollbook;
- Distributing ballots and/or Voter Access Cards; and
- Ensuring all votes are cast in secret.
Poll Managers are also responsible for the following:
- Verifying each voter’s name in the pollbook and writing “VOTED” in the appropriate space;
- Having the voter sign the receipt book;
- Providing voter information;
- Deciding challenges to voters;
- Encoding V oter Access Cards;;
- Providing voter instructions;
- Collecting V oter Access Cards;
- Ballot cancellation;
- Completing reporting requirements at the end of the election; and
- Processing absentee ballots and ruling on absentee voter challenges, if any.
