Constitutional Rights Organization Supports Leaders of the City of Mesa, Arizona Partnership with Immigration and Customs Enforcement Through the 287(g) Program

City of Mesa, Arizona – American Constitutional Rights Union (ACRU) supports the city of Mesa Police Chief Dan Butler, Mayor Mark Freeman and the Councilmembers as they continue to honor their oath to protect and to serve the citizens of Mesa by formally cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) through the 287(g) Jail Enforcement Model.

“It was over Memorial Day weekend when a young Air Force Academy freshman, 18-year-old Ava Moore, was killed by an illegal immigrant while kayaking on Lake Grapevine in Texas. We need more of our courageous elected officials and law enforcement agencies to step up, enforce the law and protect citizens from the scourge of criminal illegal immigrants in our communities,” stated ACRU Executive Director, Lt. Col. Allen West. “Chief Butler and the leadership of the City of Mesa exemplify what it means to be a true defender of the law. All law enforcement agencies should take note and follow this lead to fully embrace the authorization afforded to designated officers through these models. Well done.”

According to ICE: “The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 added Section 287(g) to the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) — authorizing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to delegate to state and local law enforcement officers the authority to perform specified immigration officer functions under the agency’s direction and oversight. The 287(g) Program enhances the safety and security of our nation’s communities by allowing ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) to partner with state and local law enforcement.”
